Public Information

East Gippsland Institute of TAFE - together with Podiatrist Mal Walker of East Gippsland Podiatry - have combined their expertise to provide a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals and trained health carers to extend their range of services in the foot and hand care industry.

Foot and Hand Carers provide a basic foot and hand care service in a way which is currently not available, andfor treatment that does not require a Podiatrist's intervention.

The definition of a "Foot and Hand Carer" is someone who :

'Trims nails, reduces corns and calluses, massages, maintains and monitors the general hygiene of hands and feet'.

Foot and Hand Carers don't diagnose, they simply maintain foot and hand health, and refer to foot specialists and general practitioners should problems arise.

Foot and Hand Carers are required to work within the parameters of their qualification.

They are expected to consult as required with an appropriate allied health professional.

Foot and Hand Carers provide domiciliary care in regional and remote areas which cannot support specialist care.

Successful graduates of the Foot and Hand Carers course will receive one of the following qualifications.

  • Certificate III in Foot and Hand Care
  • Certificate IV in Foot and Hand Care

These qualifications will also provide the opportunity for the carers to join the professional Foot and Hand Carers Association.
